Master's specialisation of Biomedical SciencesEpidemiology
Are you curious about the health of human populations? Do you want to understand how diseases emerge, spread, and can be prevented? Ever wondered why COVID-19 spread so rapidly or whether immunotherapy truly works for bladder cancer? Then epidemiology may be the specialisation for you.
Something for you?
- This specialisation is part of the Master’s programme of Biomedical Sciences in which you shape your own learning path by choosing a specialisation, a career profile, electives and internships.
- You will learn to identify risk factors, uncover causal relationships with careful and unbiased reasoning, integrate biological, environmental, and social determinants of health, and develop strategies to predict and prevent health outcomes.
- You will gain strong hands‑on research skills by collecting high‑quality data, compiling existing datasets and real‑world evidence, and applying powerful analytical methods to address challenges in areas such as cancer, perinatal health, infectious diseases, and prevention and make a real impact on healthcare and society.
- In the second year, you choose one of the following career profiles: Communication, Consultancy, Entrepreneurship or Research.
- You compliment your programme with up to four elective courses which allows you to explore other Biomedical topics.
- With two internships (one research internship and one profile internship) you have ample opportunity to develop your professional skills in practice.

What will you learn
This specialisation delves deep into various health domains, from infectious diseases to cancer and from lifestyle to public health. It allows students to acquire valuable skills in every phase of research: from study design and data collection to analysis and the dissemination of results. We address questions such as:
- Does adherence to a Mediterranean diet decrease the risk of cardiovascular events?
- How is HIV infection distributed among different populations?
- Is immunotherapy effective in bladder cancer, and what are its side effects?
- Does early screening decrease the mortality of colon cancer?
- Do pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia have adverse effects on the offspring?
Future career opportunities
This master’s programme in Biomedical Sciences will teach you refined research skills. However, at Radboud University we understand that not everyone wants to become a researcher. A biomedical scientist has lots of options. To help kick-start your career after graduation we offer you different career profiles. There are mandatory courses connected to each profile.
Career prospectsResearch
Internships in the field of epidemiology help students acquire valuable skills in every phase of research. The hands-on approach of these projects allows students to be curious and learn freely while actively contributing to clinical research or public health. These internships can be completed at various departments of the Radboudumc, but plenty of opportunities exist at other locations in the Netherlands or abroad as well. We have many connections with research institutes, companies, and universities all over the world. So, the possibilities are endless!
Examples are other universities and academic hospitals, research organisations such as the Integral Cancer Centre Netherlands (IKNL) and Lareb, governmental institutes including the RIVM and municipal health services (GGDs), as well as pharmaceutical companies, medical data companies, and healthcare consultancy organisations.
