Can you introduce yourself?
Hoi, I am Cristina Inoue. I have a PhD in Sustainable Development (Environmental Politics and Management), University of Brasília. My area of expertise encompasses global environmental politics, climate and biodiversity governance in the Amazon, transnational networks and development assistance. I look into these issues as the interplay of actors, power and institutions through international relations and environmental justice lenses. My aim is to find transformative paths to a planet that is just and safe for all beings (humans and non-humans).
Why did you choose to study/work in this field?
The picture that you see was taken in the Brazilian Cerrado in the Kalunga Territory, an area inhabited by Quilombolas. They have been living there for hundreds of years. In their territory, they could conciliate the protection of the land and biodiversity and well-being, despite global and national political, social and economic dynamics that pressure against them. These lifeways instigate me to study/work global environmental politics.
What are you currently doing your own research on?
Currently, I have been looking into indigenous people (IP) and traditional populations ways of knowing and being in different contexts (socio-biodiversity value chains, the 30th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and international funds/financing for "nature" and sustainability) and interrogate to what extent these processes are just (equitable, inclusive) and what we can learn from IP and traditional populations.
What advice do you have for students making their study choice?
When making your choices try to balance reason and emotion, mind and heart. Learning can be an adventure if we are passionate about the subjects we choose to study. Furthermore, if we can make a difference (even if small) in the world that is rewarding and heartwarming.
What is the best part of working with students?
I am always learning something new.
