This specialisation focuses on how sustainability transformations are governed through the interaction between local, regional, national and international levels. You study how governments, companies, NGOs, communities and other stakeholders negotiate and shape sustainability policies and initiatives in specific places and regions. Across themes such as climate, biodiversity, water, resources, cities and nature conservation, you learn to analyse how different actors and governance levels can work together to support effective and fair transformations.
Master's specialisation in Governing Sustainability Transformations
- This specialisation focuses on how complex sustainability transformations are governed across scales: from international environmental agreements to local and regional implementation. You study public and private governance arrangements, political contestation and social change in areas such as climate, biodiversity, water, resources, cities and nature conservation.
- This specialisation connects global, urban/ rural, regional, national and environmental governance. You learn to analyse how policies, agreements and initiatives are made, implemented and contested, and make changes accordingly
- Teaching combines local, international and comparative perspectives with grounded cases of sustainability governance. Topics include climate change, biodiversity, water, resources, sustainable cities and the politics of implementation.
- The programme is distinctive in its focus on governance: the actors, institutions, power relations and policy processes that enable or constrain sustainability transformations both locally and globally.
- You can develop a multidisciplinary profile through electives and a thesis-based research internship with a relevant organisation.
