Master's specialisation of Artificial Intelligence | Joint programme optionalHuman Centered Intelligent Systems
Are you interested in human-centered technology for a responsible future of society? This interdisciplinary AI Master's specialisation studies and develops intelligent systems, from medical AI, to artificial agents, to human-machine interfaces.
Something for you?
- You will study advanced AI methods and artifacts that can make a crucial difference for human well-being, such as neurotechnology, brain-computer-interfaces, speech recognition, and vision and auditory prosthetics.
- You will learn about the societal impact of AI and learn to understand ethical considerations with respect to AI.
- This specialisation focuses on the application of AI techniques and principles in healthcare, assistive technology, human-robot interaction, and other application areas.
- You will work with stakeholders and companies on actual problems for which novel solutions are sought.
- You can combine this specialisation with another related programme, for example the Research Master's Cognitive Neuroscience or the Master's specialisation Data Science, and apply for an exemption of 60ECs.
- You can join the dual Programme AI & Digital Society and study a year at the University of Glasgow.

What will you learn
Within the Master's specialisation Human Centered Intelligent Systems you can choose one out of three tracks:
- Technology Design
- Societal Impact of AI
- Dual Degree: AI & Digital Society
Depending on your track and chosen elective courses, you will learn about state-of-the-art techniques in important application areas of AI, such as using Nengo to implement cognitive robotics, machine learning techniques to understand word embeddings, Unity programming to realise computer graphics, and setting up an EEG system for brain-computer interaction. You will learn about the societal impact of AI and neurotechnology on our daily life and how AI may improve the quality of life in patients and persons with disabilities.
Study programmeFuture career opportunities
Our Artificial Intelligence graduates have excellent job prospects and are often offered a job before they have actually graduated. Many of our graduates go on to do a PhD either at a major research institute or university with an AI department. Other graduates work in consultancy or project management for companies interested in research on software development and applications for human-robot interaction or the effects and consequences of AI for modern society. Examples of companies looking for AI experts with this specialisation: Webpower, Google, Facebook, Philips, Booking.com, Philips, Rabobank. Some students have even gone on to start their own companies.
Career prospectsResearch
The programme is closely related to the research carried out in the internationally renowned Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. This institute has several unique facilities for brain imaging using EEG, fMRI and MEG. You will be able to use these facilities for instance for actual robotics research at the Donders Institute, and to obtain hands-on experience with cognitive architectures for robots and robot simulation software.
