What will you learn

The specialisation in Metaphysics and Epistemology looks at the age-old fundamental questions regarding being, truth and reality from a contemporary viewpoint with the help of modern philosophers. Of course, you’ll also examine these questions in the light of major thinkers from the hermeneutic tradition and from the continental tradition who were critical of these hermeneutic developments in philosophy. But again, with a contemporary aim: What new and original insights can these philosophers of the past give us today?

Curriculum and courses

Future career opportunities

This programme has been designed for people with the ambition to conduct philosophical research at a university. Graduates tend to fall into one of three groups:

  1. A majority of the students continue their research within academia by applying for a doctoral programme in the Netherlands or abroad. We take particular pride in the fact that more than 60 percent of our graduates manage to obtain a PhD position within two years of graduating.
  2. A second group goes on to teach philosophy at secondary schools.
  3. And a third group enter research-related professions outside of education.

Our graduates are also represented in journalism, science policy, and politics.

The reputation of Radboud University – and of the Philosophy Faculty in particular – will definitely serve you well whichever career path you choose.

After your studies

All of the research related to this specialisation is embedded in the Center for Contemporary Philosophy  (CCEP). It’s the Netherlands’ main centre for teaching and research in 20th and 21st century European philosophy. The centre continues Radboud University’s strong tradition in continental philosophy.

The department of Metaphysics and Epistemology is part of the Chair of Fundamental Philosophy. In Nijmegen, research in Metaphysics and Epistemology mainly focuses on the meaning and status of being, truth and subjectivity in the hermeneutic tradition. Authors in the continental tradition who were critical of these hermeneutic developments in philosophy are also included. Current research projects are devoted to Ricoeur and Derrida on Metaphor and Truth and The Hermeneutics of Strangeness.

Thesis subjects in Metaphysics and Epistemology

Although many research Master’s students choose a topic related to the research activities of the Centre, this is not mandatory. Recent Master’s theses (publishable articles) were about the following themes:

  • The Ontology of Alain Badiou
  • Phenomenology and Objectivity
  • The role of Pseudonyms in Kierkegaard’s Oeuvre
  • Heidegger and History
  • Being-With and Community in Heidegger’s Philosophy
