Why study Molecular Mechanisms of Disease (research) in Nijmegen?

Aspiring to contribute to the development of new therapies for metabolic, developmental, infectious and/or immunological diseases? The internationally acclaimed research Master's programme in Molecular Mechanisms of Disease provides an excellent foundation for a career in academic or commercial research. This unique programme provides you with insight into the molecular processes underlying health and disease. It translates disease-related biomedical research in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and genetics into clinical experimental research in patients. The MMD programme offers a broad and interdisciplinary approach with the opportunity for specialisation in the form of electives and two research internships. Furthermore, you will receive a thorough training in skills, such as academic writing, applying for grants and the verbal and written presentation of research results. The programme is organised along three major educational themes:

  1. Immunity, infection and inflammation / Immunity-related disorders and immunotherapy;
  2. Metabolism, transport and motion / Metabolic disorders;
  3. Cell growth and differentiation / Developmental disorders and malignancies.
  • You will follow an intensive and broad biomedical programme that provides in-depth knowledge and research experience of disease-related molecular mechanisms.
  • Participate in group-oriented education and be part of a small group of highly motivated national and international students. 
  • Acquire skills in academic writing, team work and presentations, and learn how to successfully apply for grants.
  • You will be part of the unique research community within the Radboud university medical centre. And you will do two 6-months research internships, one of which can be abroad in a laboratory of your choice.
  • A personal mentor will help you to reflect on your study programme and career perspectives.
  • About 80 percent of our students so far have graduated within the designated 2 years; 97 percent have successfully received their degree. 
  • Subsequent PhD positions are available.
