Philosophy

Time to specialise. During the Master’s in Philosophy, you will choose one of five specialisations. Not only will you bring a specific focus to your philosophy studies, but you will also opt for a distinct philosophical approach. In all cases, you will choose a Master’s programme that prepares you for a professional career in philosophy outside academia.

Specialisations

  • Cognition, Culture and Communication

This specialisation combines the philosophy of language and cognition with cognition sciences. You'll study questions of cultural evolution, perception and understanding, cooperative behaviour, consciousness and free will.

  • Continental Philosophy

You will study current issues in metaphysics and philosophical anthropology on the basis of the philosophers from the continental tradition. You will focus on the relationship between language and truth, and metaphysical criticism and psychoanalysis.

  • Ethics and Political Philosophy

In this Master’s specialisation you will learn how to critically examine political, social and cultural developments in our society. You will learn to relate to the ‘natural’ reality in which we find ourselves.

  • History of Philosophy

This specialisation teaches how to understand current ideas and understandings from their specific history. You'll better understand current issues, by learning how they came into being.

  • Philosophy, Politics and Society

The Master's specialisation Philosophy, Politics and Society offers advanced courses in applied and socially engaged philosophy, exploring current debates in climate ethics, biopolitics, the role of values in science, and the nature–culture divide.

  • Pre-Master's Philosophy

If your Bachelor’s programme prevents you from directly enrolling in the Master’s programme, you may be eligible for the pre-Master’s programme in Philosophy.
