What will you learn

The Science for Sustainability programme is a 2-year full-time on-campus learning programme. You learn how to contribute to environmental sustainability challenges (e.g. biodiversity decline, climate change or resource scarcity) in collaboration with societal actors. The second year centres around the MSc thesis.

Science for Sustainability has four learning lines: (1) quantitative assessment and modelling with a focus on the natural sciences (2) focus on governance and organisational change rooted in the management and organisation sciences (3) a sustainability learning line with a focus on integrating different types of disciplinary knowledge and (4) a skills-oriented learning line on transdisciplinarity with a methodological focus on how to define, analyse and address environmental sustainability challenges in collaboration with scientists of other disciplines and societal actors.

Future career opportunities

The aim of the Master's programme Science for Sustainability is to train sustainability navigators, i.e., applied scientists or academic professionals who are able to guide the transition towards a sustainable society in collaboration with societal actors. Labour market research has shown that there is a great need for transdisciplinary trained sustainability experts. A selection of possible positions that graduates can fulfil include sustainability advisor for governments or companies, sustainability researcher, knowledge broker in the field of sustainability, and environmental expert. There are also graduates who become an entrepreneur and start their own sustainable company.

Research

Within the broad field of sustainability, the unique identity of the Science for Sustainability programme lies in the emphasis on two specific dimensions: the first is planetary boundaries: we are assessing whether human activities are within the planetary boundaries with regards to the environmental sustainability. We are building upon knowledge from especially the natural sciences. Disciplines like biology, earth sciences, chemistry and physics.

The second is societal transition process. We are contributing to the necessary societal transition process(es), considering the specific societal context of the environmental sustainability challenge through the inclusion of actor-specific knowledge and values, as well as the economic and societal
