Why study Science for Sustainability in Nijmegen?

Do you want to help society navigate towards a sustainable future? This master’s program teaches you how to guide societal transitions within the limits of our planet. You will deepen your understanding of the interaction between humans and nature, learn to work with system models such as climate models, and discover how organizations can drive change. You will learn how to tackle sustainability challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, together with companies, governments, and NGOs. In doing so, you will develop into a sustainability navigator: an academic professional who connects science and practice to create a more sustainable society.

In the first year, courses are organized along several learning lines. The first, Natural Sciences, teaches you, for example, how to quantify greenhouse gas emissions, assess the impact of agriculture on biodiversity, determine safe concentration levels of chemical substances, and use models to understand the influence of humans on nature. Societal Sciences explores how governments, companies, and citizens collaborate to tackle environmental problems and helps you develop the skills needed to guide sustainability transitions. In the Transdisciplinary line, you will learn how you, as an academic professional, can contribute to sustainability transformations together with companies, governments, and NGOs.
