Career prospects
After your studies
Science in Society prepares you for a dynamic career as an analytical and communicative bridge-builder between science and society. You will be trained as an interdisciplinary scientist who understands and effectively connects the scientific, political and social domains. Such intermediaries are indispensable, especially in places where scientists are in direct contact with citizens, politicians, or entrepreneurs.
Possible occupations
- Policy advisor at governments, interest groups or advisory bodies
- Researcher that connects science and society
- Consultant
- Journalist or Communications advisor
- Information officer
Most of our alumni end up working in knowledge intensive positions that are close to society, including in policy institutions, advisory bodies, NGOs and governments. Think for example of organisations like the RIVM, TNO, Rijkswaterstaat, or other organisations that both engage in natural scientific research while also being close to policymaking or societal engagement.
In addition, the specialisation offers a solid basis for a career as a researcher in interdisciplinary research projects at universities and other knowledge institutions such as the Rathenau Institute. Several alumni have continued to do a PhD in the natural sciences, the social sciences, or at the intersection between science and society. We support your career orientation through close supervision and through networking events, an alumni day and a yearly excursion. In your graduation projects you can choose to collaborate with our external partners in outside of academic contexts.
