In this Master's programme we rethink the principles of current economic systems and analyse how to enhance the environmental responsibility of businesses. We aim to develop new business models that contribute to a sustainable future. What does a sustainable and just economy look like, and how can we enable such a new system?

- You will be challenged to rethink our current economic structures and to explore alternatives for a more sustainable economy. For example, we will discuss the doughnut economy, issues of degrowth, post-growth and green growth, or the prospects of the circular economy.
- Particular attention is paid to innovation: not just technological innovation but also to innovating manufacturing processes and new business models.
- A major focus is placed on policies and the social-organisational aspects of change in businesses.

What will you learn
The private sector plays a crucial role in shaping our sustainable society. We can see this in the way that products and services have been developed, produced, and distributed. This places a great deal of pressure on the world’s natural resources. You can expect to learn about new business models, organisational studies and innovation management as well as different environmentally-sustainable directions for our current economies. Examples of sustainable economies include the we-economy, the bio-economy, the circular economy and the sharing economy. Another crucial question is whether these can all exist in today’s market as the focus is mainly placed on economic growth.

After completion, you will be equipped with skills to analyse and design policy change for sustainability, to facilitate collaboration between different parties, to write policy documents or strategic plans on environment and society. Among others, you will have the ability to become:
- Environmental practitioner or consultant
- Sustainability advisor in businesses

- Academic researcher or analyst
Research
A few examples to indicate the type of research in this specialisation:
- What is the role of innovative start-ups in changing the existing technologies and policies in the fashion industry or in the building sector, in order to make them more sustainable?
- How do businesses work on circularity? For example, do they emphasize the concept of refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, or recycle?
- How can new business models be developed while working on the bio-economy, the circular economy or the sharing economy?
- How can certification be helpful in increasing the responsibility of companies and their identification for the consumer?
