Why study this programme?
In this Master’s specialisation you will study how different actors influence the physical form of cities but also the way in which they present and understand the character and identity of cities, and how they make use of the typical urban environment in their daily activities.
Master's specialisation in Urban and Cultural Geography
- The focal point in this specialisation is the city: its hybrid nature, its political economy, its active civil society and the daily struggles and advantages of urban life. How is the city represented? How do city images emerge and how are they contested?
- The programme takes an emancipatory approach to the field of Human Geography, meaning that we engage with the less privileged in society.
- In contrast to many other Master’s programmes in this area, we explicitly focus on the role of urban culture as the driving force for urban development. We define culture as the behaviours and beliefs of people in society. Culture in the sense of the arts and architecture are included when seen of as a form of expression by the community.
- The programme focuses as much on mainstream theory as on alternative ones. This will help you develop an academic attitude that allows you to be critical when it comes to your own views, research and findings. Although the foundation of this specialisation is sociological and geographical, our approach to this theme is highly multidisciplinary to include related fields as spatial planning and anthropology.
- Over the past years, Radboud University has made a name for itself in the field of Human Geography for not shying away from critical debates and by researching topics in the field that are of societal importance but not always favoured with large (EU) funding. We’re known for not staying on the beaten path.
