I joined a student association to get to know my fellow students, but I got so much more out of it than I ever expected!

Why did you join a student association?

“When I started university, I mainly wanted to meet new people. During the introduction week, I got to know all kinds of student associations. I eventually chose Mycelium, the study association for my study programme because it was an easy way to get to know my fellow students better. I enjoyed it so much that I later joined several committees and even spent a year on the board.

What kind of activities did you organise?

“There was always something going on at our association throughout the year: drinks, parties, weekend trips, study trips, workshops and lectures. In my second year, I joined the Battle Committee, where we organised sports and games. Looking back, I actually regret not joining a committee in my first year, as it gave me so many new connections, experiences and opportunities to develop myself. After that, I became secretary of the board in my third year, and in my final year of my bachelor’s degree, I helped organise the introduction programme for new students.

What did being part of a student association add to your student life?

“I wouldn’t have wanted to miss my time at Mycelium for the world. I met my best friends there, and through board drinks and joint activities, I also met many students from other associations.

I also learned an incredible amount from my year on the board and from the committees I joined. I really enjoyed organising activities for the entire association together with a group of motivated students during my year on the board. When it comes to committee work, the highlight was definitely the introduction committee. Organising the entire introduction programme for our degree programme as a team of eight was incredibly rewarding. I learned how to work together, take responsibility and discovered how much I’m actually capable of. I still use those experiences in my work as a communications adviser every day.”
