You want to use an excess of at least 5 EC from your minor space (or minor abroad) to replace a major course.
A surplus value is the number of EC you obtain more than is necessary for the minor (abroad). For instance, if you do a minor of 25 EC and you have five courses of 6 EC for that (=30 EC), you have 5 EC surplus value. For that, you can assign one of the 6 EC courses to replace a 5 EC course in your major. The remaining 1 EC will then remain in your minor as an exemption.
