Who am I and what do I work on?
I have been working at the Radboud University Medical Center (RUMC) and the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behavior for nearly two decades. Throughout my career, I've witnessed the evolution of cognitive neuroscience from its inception, and even after more than 25 years, the brain remains the most captivating and enigmatic organ. As a dedicated academic, I have always been driven by my passion for translating research insights from clinical neuroscience into the intricate puzzle of diagnosing and treating patients. My background as a neurologist and psychiatrist/psychotherapist has equipped me with extensive experience in diagnostics and various treatment approaches within psychiatry and its intersections with somatic medicine.
What initiative do I represent?
Research Programs at Radboudumc: I am a daily board member of two out of three research programs at Radboudumc that are closely linked to Mental Health - "Psychology, Behavior & Health" and "Stress and Mental Health." These programs are instrumental in advancing our translational understanding of mental health and well-being.
Interdisciplinary Neurostimulation Initiatives: My department actively participates in interdisciplinary non-invasive neurostimulation initiatives that connect with our national and international networks. We collaborate with the European Society for Brain Stimulation, engaging in everything from fundamental proof-of-principle studies to large-scale clinical trials in neuropsychiatric disorders.
Advisory Board Role: I serve on the Advisory Board of the Nijmegen Institute for Science Practitioners in Addiction, which plays a vital role in addressing addiction and its treatment.
Prevention Hub: We are central to the Prevention Hub at Radboudumc, which brings together various collaborations in somatic and mental health prevention.
International Mental Health Alliance: Our department actively participates in the International Mental Health Alliance at Radboudumc/HAN and regional mental health institutions. This initiative fosters the exchange of knowledge and expertise in mental health topics in a culturally sensitive manner, involving professionals from the Netherlands and Asian countries like Indonesia, Cambodia, and India.
What is our connection with the Healthy Brain pillar?
Creating Awareness: We are committed to raising awareness of vulnerability and resilience to environmental stress throughout one's lifespan. Our research and initiatives aim to contribute to a healthier and more resilient brain.
Prevention: Our work extends to prevention efforts on a larger scale, focusing not only on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues but also on the promotion of mental well-being.
Cross-Campus Collaboration: We actively engage in cross-campus collaborations that directly contribute to the advancement of the Healthy Brain pillar. By bridging disciplines and fostering collaboration, we seek to enhance our understanding of the brain's intricacies and the ways to promote its health.
