Synchronising SURFdrive with files on your device

SURFdrive lets you synchronise files stored in the cloud with a folder on your device. First, install Nextcloud.

With the Nextcloud Desktop Client, you can automatically synchronize files from your SURFdrive with your computer.

Steps

Installing Nextcloud Desktop Client on a Radboud-managed workstation

On a Radboud-managed device, you can install the Nextcloud Desktop Client via the Software Center (Windows) or the Company Portal (macOS).

  1. Click the Start button and search for 'Software Center' (Windows) or click on Finder and search for 'Company Portal' (macOS).
  2. Search for and select 'Nextcloud Desktop Client'.
  3. Click 'Install'.

Installing Nextcloud Desktop Client on your own device

Working on your own computer or laptop? Download the Nextcloud Desktop Client from the official Nextcloud website.

Setting up Nextcloud Desktop Client

  1. Open the Nextcloud Desktop Client after installation.
  2. Click 'Log in'.
  3. Enter the following server address: https://surfdrive.surf.nl
  4. Click 'Next'.
  5. Your web browser will open automatically. Log in with your Radboud credentials (u-number and password).
  6. Click 'Grant access' to give the Nextcloud Desktop Client access to your SURFdrive.

Choosing a synchronization folder

After logging in, you can choose where on your computer the files will be synchronized:

  • Default: A folder named 'Nextcloud' will be automatically created in your user directory.
  • Different folder: Click 'Choose different folder' to select another location.

Preferably use a folder on your C drive (or your personal folder on a Mac). It is not recommended to synchronize with a network drive or OneDrive, as this may lead to synchronization issues.

Choosing synchronization options

During setup, you can choose how your files will be synchronized:

  1. Sync all files – All files will be fully downloaded to your computer.
  2. Choose what to sync – Select specific folders you want to synchronize.
  3. Use virtual files instead of downloading content immediately – Files are visible but only downloaded when you open them. This saves a lot of storage space.
