Dr. Gijs Bijlstra's research focuses on social categorisation and discrimination. In what ways do prejudices and stereotypes influence how we perceive others? What is the role of social norms in whether or not we express prejudice? What is the effect of media on openness to others? And, how do we learn from each other in interactions with people from different social groups? It is important to understand the processes underlying discrimination to be able to develop effective interventions. Recently, Gijs received a grant from AFAS Software / the AFAS Foundation to conduct research on diversity, inclusion and reducing discrimination.

In 2007, Gijs Bijlstra worked on the development of the Radboud Faces Database (RaFD) together with Oliver Langner, Ron Dotsch, Daniel Wigboldus and Ad van Knippenberg. This database is freely available for scientific research (www.rafd.nl).

About
Gijs Bijlstra researches whether stereotypes and prejudices affect the way in which we perceive others. This is something that often happens without people being aware of it. His research includes the study of the way in which stereotypes may affect the recognition of emotions or awareness.
