Prof. Sible de Blaauw investigates the first centuries of Christian art and architecture. This early development, originating in the Mediterranean world, was and is of great influence on the art and cultural history of the whole of Europe. The continuous effect of early Christian culture is therefore also part of his field of research. Specializing in Rome and Italy, he also focuses on Catholic church building in northwestern Europe, with special attention to the Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers. He is also involved on various fronts in the valorization and preservation of religious heritage in the Netherlands.
