Bas Bloem, neurologist and Professor of Neurological Movement Disorders, founded the Radboudumc Center of Expertise for Parkinson's & Movement Disorders in 2002. The Center of Expertise strives to provide the best possible care for people with Parkinson's disease, parkinsonism or a rare hereditary movement disorder.
Bloem works closely with Marten Munneke. In 2004, they founded ParkinsonNet, a national network of more than 4,000 care providers (reference date 01-01-2024) who specialize in the treatment and guidance of people with Parkinson's or parkinsonism. Research shows that this innovative care concept leads to better care, a decrease in disease complications and a significant reduction in healthcare costs. Through collaborations with healthcare institutions in the United States, Norway and Luxembourg, among others, the ParkinsonNet concept has also been introduced internationally.
Bloem's scientific research focuses particularly on Parkinson's disease. His studies include gait and balance disorders, and the development and evaluation of person-centered medicine. In addition, his research focuses on wearable sensors with much attention to machine learning and artificial intelligence. Moreover, since 2018, he has been doing a lot of work on the relationship between Parkinson's and exposure to toxins in our environment. In 2022, Bas Bloem received the prestigious Stevin premium for the social impact of the research he and his team are doing on Parkinson's disease. He is using this premium for new groundbreaking research aimed at preventing parkinson's.
Bloem has more than 1,000 scientific publications to his name, including more than 850 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. He also supervised 64 PhD students as (co)supervisor.
