Christiaan studied history and philosophy at the universities of Ghent and Amsterdam (UvA), and defended his dissertation in political philosophy at KU Leuven (with a research stay at The Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy in London). He then worked as a lecturer in philosophy at the universities of Leuven and Tilburg.
His research and expertise are situated in the tradition of continental philosophy, with a focus on social and political philosophy, and critical theory. He has published on topics such as political universalism; democracy and violence; property and power; the commons; the critique of subjective rights; and the critique of labor.
He is currently working on a research project on the critique and rejection of work, the social role of work, and the work ethic.
