My research and teaching are focused on the form and functioning of formal and informal (inter)national cultural networks. Within this framework, I specialize in patronage theory and history. I devoted book publications, journal articles and lectures to both present-day and 19th century forms of support, paying special attention to the (putative) continuity between these two eras. I explored the theoretical boundaries and possibilities of research into patronage, by publishing on possible motives for patronage, on forms of strategic giving, on cultural value en legitimacy, and on patronage relationships in literature, visual arts, theatre, rock, and hiphop.
My current research focus: the dynamics of patronage in pop culture.
