Prof. Han Brunner performs scientific research into the causes of mental disabilities and congenital defects. When a patient or family comes to him for genetic testing, this often marks the beginning of one or more research projects. In the past few years, the causes of various skeletal defects were identified, as well as those of congenital heart defects and congenital brain defects. The research not only has medical significance, but also often contributes to a better understanding of the main biological processes in the development of humans and animals.

Together with researchers from the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI), Brunner is involved in large-scale informatics research into the links between all kinds of congenital diseases and the underlying genes and patterns.
