Buijzen is professor of persuasive and strategic communication. Her work at Radboud University focuses on the young (media) consumer, within the paradigm of positive communication research. She strives to enrich and apply communication scientific knowledge to improve young people's well-being.

In 2019 she received a prestigious Vici grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for a 5-year research project investigating the implementation of health campaigns via youths' online social networks. Earlier, she received an NWO Veni (2003) and Vidi (2008) grant for talented young researchers, and a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). Her work has been recognized by several awards from the International Communication Association, the International Conference on Research in Advertising and the Child and Teen Consumption Conference.

In addition to research and teaching, Buijzen strives to bridge the gap between academia and society. With academic partner Esther Rozendaal she runs Bitescience.com, an accessible and attractive online portal for worldwide academic research on communication and media.

As of 2020 Buijzen has become Professor of Communication and Behavioural Change at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she will continue her lab and Bitescience. She remains affiliated with Radboud University.
