Unintentional accidents remain problematic in the Netherlands. Especially children end up in the hospital with unintentional injuries, so educating children on how to behave safely in unsafe situations seems crucial to promote our society’s well-being. In safety villages children learn about safety by actually experiencing unsafe scenarios and their consequences. Theoretically, this experiential way of education is often seen as preferable over traditional classroom education, but strong empirical evidence of effects of experiential- compared to traditional safety education seems lacking. In collaboration with safety village the Risk Factory (https://www.riskfactorylimburgnoord.nl/) my research investigates how and when experiential safety education leads to positive learning outcomes.
