As part of a Joint PhD at Leiden University and Ghent University, Jasper De Paepe conducted research on the relationship between technology and community-oriented policing. He carried out ethnographic research within local police services in Belgium and the Netherlands, focusing in particular on how technology influences the discretionary space of neighbourhood police officers. He also explored theoretical concepts related to legitimacy, justice, and science and technology studies.
Alongside his doctoral research, Jasper De Paepe has conducted research on local security networks, police use of force, police–academic relations, and the interaction between experts and policymakers during the COVID-19 crisis in Belgium and Australia.
Jasper De Paepe also serves on the board of the Working Group on Policing within the European Society of Criminology and the European Police Research Institutes Collaboration.
