Daniel DeRock researches and teaches primarily on international political economy and global governance. Currently, his research is divided into two themes. The first is the global political economy of the neurodiversity movement. The second is global environmental governance, particularly through international organizations (IOs) such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. These research themes are united by an overarching interest in the politics of expertise in global governance and paradigm shifts in economic policy.

His PhD (2022), from the University of Amsterdam, was titled "The Politics of Global Statistical Harmonization." The PhD research investigated the ways that IOs "see" the world through quantitative indicators like GDP, and analyzed the diffusion of macroeconomic measurement practices around the world.
