Sophie van Dongen (she/her) obtained a BA in liberal arts and sciences with distinction (cum laude), majoring in international law and international relations, at University College Utrecht and an LL.B. in Dutch law at Utrecht University. She obtained an LL.M. in international and transnational criminal law at the University of Amsterdam, with distinction (cum laude). During her studies, van Dongen participated in the University of Amsterdam's Business and Human Rights Clinic and interned at multiple non-governmental organizations.
In January 2023, van Dongen started as a PhD Candidate at the Research Center for State and Law (SteR). Her research focuses on the possibility of prosecuting environmental harm on the basis of international criminal law. Prof. dr. R.B.J. Tinnevelt, mr. dr. M.J.M. Krabbe and mr. dr. S.M.A. Lestrade are acting as supervisors.
