Our research interests lie in the field of soft matter, at the interface of chemistry, physics and materials science, with an emphasis on colloidal systems, in which small micrometre-sized particles are dispersed in a (usually liquid) medium. We combine the development of new colloidal particles using synthetic chemistry with microscopy and optical tweezer experiments to study a wide range of fundamental and complex problems in condensed matter science. Examples include banana-shaped liquid crystals, the development of antimicrobial colloidal nanocrystal clusters, grain boundaries in crystals, two-dimensional melting and synchronisation in driven colloidal systems.
