Michiel van Emmerik’s research focuses mainly on the interaction between International and European Law (European Union and European Convention on Human Rights) on the one hand and Dutch Constitutional and Administrative Law on the other hand. His special expertise lies in the impact of European fundamental rights and principles (e.g. proportionality) on Dutch constitutional and administrative law. He coauthored the book European Fundamental Rights and Dutch administrative law (latest edition 2023). He combines this expertise with experiences from legal practice (as a deputy-judge and previously as a civil servant). Judicial integrity (e.g. the assignment of cases) forms a special point of interest. He does not confine himself to his own field of law but also looks into other fields of law, like criminal law (judicial protection in the field of the enforcement of public law, like administrative penalties) and private law (liability of the government for violations of human rights).
