Prof. Joep Galama investigates enteroviruses, a group of about hundred viruses that also includes the polio and coxsackie viruses. These viruses usually cause mild infections but sometimes also more serious ones (paralysis, encephalitis, myocarditis). Serious infections are particularly found in newborns. Enteroviruses play a part in the development of chronic diseases such as heart failure and type 1 diabetes.

Galama's department of Virology studies the molecular aspects of virus multiplication, how these viruses try to bypass the immune system, and how the enterovirus can disturb the function of the immune system in diabetes patients. Galama is also interested in haemorrhages occurring in humans infected by the tropical dengue virus, and in vaccination policy in the Netherlands.
