We spend a lot of time in our lives working. That is why it is so important that work gives energy and satisfaction and matches our talents and ambitions. As a researcher and teacher, I want to contribute to ensuring that we can work in an enjoyable, healthy and safe environment where we can bring out the best in ourselves. With the major changes in the nature and context of our work (think e.g. of the impact of digital technology, flexible working hours, ‘remote working’, and the changing constellation of the workforce), this is a challenge, and for me a motivation that is more important than ever. Also within the academic setting, I aim to contribute to a more balanced recognition and appreciation of the talents in research, teaching, social impact, and leadership (and patient care). In doing so, we do not want to create a five-legged sheep, but rather encourage scientists to make choices that fit their unique talents and organisational goals. There is still work to do, but we are on the right track.
