Dr L.R. Glas (Lize)

Lize Glas is Associate Professor in International and European Law at the Research Centre for State and Law.

Her research focuses on human rights protection in Europe, with particular expertise in the European Convention on Human Rights system. She has published on topics including reform, admissibility, subsidiarity, third-party interventions, unilateral declarations, pilot judgments, advisory opinions, and the execution of ECtHR judgments. Her work also explores the Court’s relationship with other European institutions, such as the Committee of Ministers, the Venice Commission and the CJEU. In addition, she has written on the institutional reform of the European Social Charter system.

Lize Glas received the Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award for her PhD thesis, The Theory, Potential and Practice of Procedural Dialogue in the European Convention on Human Rights System.

In her teaching, Lize Glas has coordinated and taught courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes and supervises Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students. She serves as a Director of the Bachelor’s programme European Law School and is currently a member of a university project group on improving the use of student evaluations of teaching.

Beyond her research and teaching, Lize Glas is actively involved in a range of organisations. She is a member of the editorial boards of ECHR Blog, EHRC Updates and the Netherlands Journal for Human Rights (NTM/NJCM-Bulletin). She also serves on the advisory council of the Campaign to Uphold Rights in Europe (CURE). In addition, she is a member of the appeal advisory committee of the Ministry of Health and Sports and the complaints advisory committee of the foundation Slachtofferhulp Nederland.

Previously, Lize Glas was a member of the Radboud Young Academy and a project coordinator for the Sector Plan Law (Institutions for Conflict Resolution), a cooperation between Leiden University, Utrecht University and Radboud University.
