Joep van der Graaf is an Assistant Professor at the Dutch Education Lab AI (NOLAI) and the Adaptive Learning Lab (ALL), part of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) at Radboud University. He is an educational researcher with a strong technical affinity, focused on optimizing learning processes for all students. His research explores who learns what, when, and why—with the aim of developing effective learning materials and improving educational practices.
Joep specializes in inquiry-based and self-directed learning, and collaborates closely with students, teachers, and educational partners to co-develop multimedia learning materials. He also investigates how AI can play a meaningful role in education, with explicit attention to instructional design in which students, teachers, and AI each have a clear and purposeful role in the learning process. He is passionate about measuring learning processes using multiple data streams and analysing them through advanced methods such as latent analyses and learning analytics.
At NOLAI, Joep coordinates the research program and facilitates collaboration among researchers. He is involved in projects such as Flora Lighthouse, which focuses on AI-supported self-regulation in academic writing, as well as in the international CELLA consortium and the NOLAI Self-Regulation project.
