I am Jasper de Groot, Assistant Professor at the Behavioural Science Institute, Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I study how social behavior, emotions, and our perception are influenced by (human) odors. In a global consortium (GCCR), I also examine smell loss as key predictor for COVID-19 infections. In my research, I integrate approaches from psychology, psychophysiology, neuroscience (fMRI), genetics, and chemical analysis. After obtaining my PhD with the highest distinction (Utrecht University, Utrecht, NL) on a Research Talent Grant from the Dutch Research Council, I received a Niels Stensen Fellowship to learn olfactory neuroscience at the Gottfried Lab (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA), before returning to the Netherlands on a VENI Innovational Research grant (2019-2022), now succeeded by a VIDI grant (2022-2027) from the Dutch Research Council. I am an active proponent of Open Science, enthusiastic teacher of students in various stages of their education, and I frequently engage in public outreach activities. The impact of my work can also be seen in numerous high impact publications (Top 5% Altmetric score, over 60 citations/paper) and through my collaborations with other scientific experts, patient organizations (Dutch Anosmia Patient Association), and the industry (e.g., Unilever R&D, TNO, iScent).
