I am Jasper de Groot, Associate Professor of Psychology at Radboud University. I study how social behavior, emotions, and our perception are influenced by (human) scents. As part of a global consortium (GCCR), I also investigate smell loss as an important predictor of COVID-19 infections. In my research, I integrate methods from psycho(physio)logy, neuroscience, genetics, and chemical analysis.
After obtaining my PhD with distinction (cum laude) at Utrecht University (Utrecht, NL) on a Research Talent Grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), I received a Niels Stensen Fellowship to study olfactory neuroscience at the Gottfried Lab (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA), before returning to the Netherlands with a VENI Innovational Research Grant (2019–2022) and currently a VIDI Grant (2022–2027).
I am an active advocate of Open Science, enjoy teaching students at different stages of their academic training, regularly participate in public outreach activities, and collaborate closely with the Dutch Patient Association for Smell and Taste Disorders.
