Professor Grootjans studies the ecohydrology of wetlands in order to find out how hydrological processes preserve wet ecosystems such as moors, wet grasslands and dune valleys. One important question in this respect is how changing land use and climate change affect these wetlands.

The research efforts abroad concern the preservation and possible restoration of natural moors, including the peat moors in Tierra del Fuego (southern Argentina) and groundwater-fed lime marshes and stream valley system in Poland and Slovakia.

Grootjans participates in various knowledge networks in the fields of nature management and dynamic coast management.
