I study how science and technology are woven through society, a.k.a. Science and Technology Studies (STS). My speciality is the study of the colleboration between science and policy (e.g. science advice, use and construction of expertise, risk assessment and standardisation, uncertainty). I am particularly fascinated by how knowledge gets certified as 'in/accurate' or 'in/correct' at the fringes of the institutions of science, for example when scientists advise policy makers or when scientists are involved with amateurs. In recent years, I have analysed failures in scientific institutions, such as weaknesses in the scientific publication system or failing error correction. (see halffman.org)
