Frans Harren is emeritus and former leader of the research group that focuses on the reliable sensing of minute quantities of trace gases in complicated gas mixtures. The group specializes in the development and application of trace gas detection methods using lasers and mass spectrometers. The laser spectroscopic methods include photoacoustic spectroscopy, frequency modulation spectroscopy, cavity enhanced spectroscopy and Dual Frequency Comb-Fourier Transform Spectroscopy. Next to this, Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry is used to detect larger Volatile Organic compounds in the atmosphere. Thereby, the focus is state-of-the-art detection of gases and volatiles at sub-part per billion (volume) concentrations, non-invasive, with high selectivity and in real-time.
