Prof. Gert-Jan Hendriks investigates the outcome of psychological treatments in the elderly persons with anxiety disorders and depression. He is interested in age-related phenomenological differences and how psychological treatments should be adapted in later life. In addition, he focuses on two specific transdiagnostic processes associated with both anxiety disorders and depression, i.e. repetitive negative thoughts and avoidance. These processes play a role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders and depression and are receiving increasing attention in research in younger adults. However, there is a great lack of research into these processes in older people, despite the fact that both anxiety disorders and depression are the most prevalent mental disorders even in old age.
