Marieke Hoetjes' research expertise lies in the field of nonverbal communication. She is specifically interested in the way in which various nonverbal aspects of communication, such as gestures, prosody, gaze and facial expressions, work together with speech to create a coherent multimodal communicative message. She is also interested in the role that nonverbal aspects of communication, such as gesture, play in (second) language acquisition and bilingualism, and in the question what gesture production can tell us about how we conceptualise the world around us.
