Prof. Maria Hopman is a physiologist who studies the connection between activity, inactivity and the development of chronic diseases. She is particularly interested in the effects of activity/inactivity on the endothelial function, a major biomarker for cardiovascular disease.

Prof. Hopman is co-initiator of the Expert Centre for Metabolic Syndrome, which conducts research on the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. She will further organize this research across the entire discipline of integrative physiology, from human in vivo to gene level. The research results will contribute to a better prevention of chronic diseases and offer insight in the underlying mechanisms.
