P.C. Huizing (Pascal)

I specialize in environmental microbiology with a focus on nitrogen cycling. My PhD research explores the isolation and cultivation of novel nitrifying microorganisms, the genomics of symbiotic bacteria living inside fish cells, and their functional roles. I aim to understand how these intracellular ammonia-oxidizing symbionts work, how they are acquired by their hosts, and how they can be used to improve nitrogen removal in aquaculture. Through a multidisciplinary approach, I contribute to sustainable aquaculture and a deeper understanding of host-microbe coevolution.
