Prof. Mike Jetten studies the ecology, physiology, and application of anaerobic microorganisms. These microbes can live without oxygen, and are used to remove nitrogen compounds and methane from water and air.

Prof. Jetten and his team also studies the biogeochemical relevance of these micro-organisms.
They have made some significant discoveries about the role of anaerobic bacteria in the global nitrogen cycle (anammox) and nitrate-dependent methane oxidation.
