Judith van der Knaap has a broad interest in the biogeochemistry of ecosystems in water. Her focus is on greenhouse gas emissions from fresh surface waters and drained peatlands, especially ditches. How much greenhouse gasses (GHG) do these ditches emit, what are the driving factors and how can we mitigate them?

Judith is currently working as a PhD candidate within the Dutch National Research Programme on Greenhouse Gases in Peatlands (NOBV), a program that was started as a result of the National Climate Agreement of the Dutch government. The aim is to study the effectiveness of various measures to reduce peat oxidation and GHG emissions, and to improve our ability to predict GHG emissions from peat soils under different conditions and mitigation strategies.
