Van der Kraan conducts research on the mechanisms of tissue destruction in osteoarthritis and systemic sclerosis. He uses this scientific knowledge to the prevention of tissue damage and the stimulation of tissue repair, including with tissue engineering. A major subject of his research is to determine how changes in intercellular communication contribute to disease development and ageing.. An example is the observation that joint inflammation results in cartilage damage by disturbing the communication between cartilage cells. Restoring normal communication can be a therapy for osteoarthritis patients.
