Eeva Langeveld is a PhD candidate at RICH. Her PhD project "Imperial Pasts in Contemporary Comics: Interrogating German and Dutch Colonialism through Word and Image" investigates how contemporary comics challenge the dominant cultural archives of colonialism in the Netherlands and Germany. Based on the method of cultural analysis, her research mainly focuses on graphic novels, educational comics, and webcomics. Comparing the Netherlands and Germany allows for a study of transnational discourses and national specificities in these two countries that have significantly different colonial pasts but overlapping memories of it today. The project’s aim is to contribute to postcolonial debates by paying attention to new and productive graphic interventions in the cultural archive.
Eeva has a BA degree from Amsterdam University College and an MA National and Transnational Studies and an MA Social Anthropology from the University of Münster (Germany). Further research interests include children’s literature, audio-visual ethnography, and life writing.
