Sjarai Lestrade has been working as assistant and associate professor at Radboud University since 2019. From 2017 up until 2019 she was assistant professor criminal (procedural) law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She studied criminal law and business economics in Nijmegen and European law in Fribourg (Switzerland). In 2018 she obtained her PhD for her research on the criminalization of human trafficking.
Education
Lestrade teaches both in the field of formal as substantive criminal law and also in European criminal law. Together with Prof. Fedorova she gives the lectures for the Master course Criminal (procedural) Law In Depth. Furthermore, she provides the lectures on criminal (procedural) law in the Bachelor-1 phase. She is the coordinator of the master's theses for the Department Criminal law & Criminology.
Research
Lestrade's research concerns both criminal law and criminal procedure law and the impact of international and European law on national law. Her research interests also include the influence of social and technological developments on criminal (procedural) law.
Other activities
Sjarai Lestrade is a substitute judge at the Gelderland District Court. She provides commentary on the Extradition Act for 'Tekst & Commentaar Internationaal Strafrecht' and the section on Moral Acts for 'Tekst & Commentaar Strafrecht'. She writes the half-year chronicle Criminal Law in the 'NJB'. She is also an annotator for the Dutch ECHR Updates and Criminal Law Updates and a member of the editorial board on ECHR jurisprudence for the journal 'Delikt and Delinkwent'.
