Sjarai Lestrade has been working as assistant and associate professor at Radboud University since 2019. From 2017 up until 2019 she was assistant professor criminal (procedural) law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She studied criminal law and business economics in Nijmegen and European law in Fribourg (Switzerland). In 2018 she obtained her PhD for her research on the criminalization of human trafficking.

Education
Lestrade teaches in the field of formal and substantive criminal law and also in European criminal law. Together with Prof. Fedorova she gives the lectures for the Master course Criminal (procedural) Law In Depth. Furthermore, she provides the lectures on criminal (procedural) law in the Bachelor-1 phase.

Research
Lestrade is interested in what she characterizes as sustainable criminal (procedural) law. Here, the criminal justice system should support the design of a society that meets the needs today, without endangering the needs of future generations. This thinking also assumes a system that strikes a balance between instrumentality and legal protection. Questions such as what role criminal law should play with regard to making our society more sustainable, what influence new technologies have on the use of criminal law instruments, and what influence rule-of-law backsliding has on criminal law cooperation between states, play a pivotal role.

Other activities
Sjarai Lestrade is a substitute judge at the Gelderland District Court. She is on the editorial board of the journal Boom-Strafblad. She provides commentary on the Extradition Act for 'Tekst & Commentaar Internationaal Strafrecht' and the section on Sexual Offences for 'Tekst & Commentaar Strafrecht'. She writes the half-year chronicle Criminal Law in the 'NJB'. She is also an annotator for the Dutch ECHR Updates.
