K.J.C.M. van Loon (Kevin) MA

Kevin van Loon is an external PhD candidate at Radboud University. His doctoral research focuses on leadership within the armed forces. In doing so, he explores questions such as: How do negative and destructive leadership emerge? What do military personnel perceive as negative leadership? And how do leaders, followers and the military context interact in shaping such leadership?

Kevin conducts his PhD research as an external PhD candidate from the Faculty of Military Sciences at the Netherlands Defence Academy, where he has been an Assistant Professor since 2019. He teaches military leadership and ethics across undergraduate, postgraduate and career development programmes. Kevin has a background as an Army officer and combines practical experience with academic research.

His areas of expertise in military leadership include command climate, mission command, followership, sources of power and hierarchy, shared leadership, the strength and dark side of cohesion, social identity theory and military culture, and combat leadership.

In military ethics, Kevin’s areas of expertise include dealing with moral dilemmas in military contexts, conflicting value systems, military ethics education, moral disengagement, just war theory, and moral injury.
