My research focuses on political culture and religion in the Roman Empire and the Early Byzantine period. My main interest lies in the spread of imperial ideology through coins, the balance of power between emperors and bishops and religious violence.

In my work I aim to make history in general and the history of Nijmegen in particular accessible to a broad public. By means of large murals in the city centre, the project 'Waalpaintings' brings historical events that took place in Nijmegen but are not visible anymore back to life.
