Prof. Vincent Marchau (Radboud University Nijmegen (RU) – Institute for Management Research (IMR)) holds a chair on Uncertainty and Adaptivity of Societal Systems. His research and education focuses on decisionmaking under deep uncertainty for several domains (e.g. transportation, logistics, spatial planning, water, health, education). Marchau is also part of the Radboud Management Academy as a coordinator/teacher for program on Sustainability and Strategy

2021 - 2024 Conventional approaches to mobility planning, based on the forecast-led paradigm, have led to unrealised expectations concerning alleviating problems such as congestion and delivering economic, social and environmental outcomes. Research shows plans become rapidly obsolete and need resilience with regard to future developments. The research project Triple Access Planning for Uncertain Futures aims to improve Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), addressing both the movement of people and goods, through two significant new considerations: Triple Access Planning (TAP) – integrating the transport system, the land-use system and the telecommunications system ; Accommodating uncertainty – being prepared for unpredictable changes (demographics, economics, regulatory context, etc.) More information
2020 - 2025 Mobility must become sustainable. But there is great uncertainty about the form this should take, ranging from electric to hydrogen, self-driving to collective, shared to as-a-service, or perhaps everything at once. But how? A step toward answering this is to understand the positions of all relevant players: the service providers who innovate, the users who may adjust their behaviour, governments that want to shape a transition. Altogether, the preferences and interactions of these players can help to determine possible paths toward future. In collaboration with public stakeholders and private companies, the Radboud University and TU Delft develop research methods and innovative approach that systematically deals with these uncertainties. This project, is looking at the decision-making process surrounding COVID-19, and its consequences for healthcare and society. The aim is to develop a form of management that can respond more quickly to constantly changing circumstances. An important term here is resilience, which is about how quickly something or someone recovers after an event. To study this resilience in healthcare and society, the researchers will develop a so-called adaptive pandemic management. More information
2023 - 2027 This research aims to improve the knowledge of the potential contribution of Mobility Hub (MH) policies toward a sustainable mobility system and to develop a participatory and adaptive approach to support MH decision-making under uncertainty across different scales (local, urban, regional). The approach aims (1) to develop a conceptual MH-framework on decision-making and apply it to cases at different scales (using Group Model Building and Shared Visioning) to specify problems, goals, and MH options, (2) to explore the uncertainty of implementing MH options (applying Assumption Based Planning) across of these scales (3) to identify the trade-offs and assessing different MH policy options given their vulnerabilities and robustness against uncertainties from the previous step to come to integrated transition pathways across scales (using Serious Gaming). 2024 - 2028 Reducing the demand for travel is difficult as mobility concerns are typically not included in decision making of many mobility generating sectors, including the health sector. Digitalisation of the healthcare sector (e.g., ehealth, health hubs) provides opportunities to deliver more local and digital healthcare, thus reducing the need to travel. However, necessary integrated frameworks and organisational arrangements are lacking. We aim to improve the healthcare organisation, accessibility and quality by developing feasible and adaptive strategies integrating Triple Access System Planning (TRIAS) Strategies in healthcare processes and business cases. To do so, we (1) develop, co-create and test new frameworks and tools to optimise healthcare accessibility and efficiency, (2) develop new business cases, financial and organisational arrangements, and (3) develop training and education for the healthcare practice.
