Dr Killian J. McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Strategy at Radboud University. He is also a Full Professor of Research at the Kyiv School of Economics in Ukraine, an Adjunct Professor of Change at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a columnist at M&A Magazine, and Principal Investigator of ScaleUA, a €1.5 million Horizon Europe project focused on resilience, recovery and transformation in Ukraine.
Killian’s research examines how firms build, adapt and reposition themselves in response to changing environments. He focuses particularly on the strategic mechanisms through which firms create and renew their capabilities, including innovation, corporate venturing, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, and divestitures.
More recently, this work has increasingly focused on geopolitical resilience: how firms anticipate, navigate and respond to war, sanctions, institutional fragmentation, economic security concerns and other major disruptions. His research has been published in leading academic journals including Research Policy and Energy Policy, as well as high-impact practitioner outlets such as Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review.
Previously, Killian was an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen and a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University London and National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He also served on the Supervisory Board of the InnoOsst Alliance.
Killian holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Groningen, cum laude Master’s degrees from Utrecht University and the University of Vienna, and a double first-class Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Law from the National University of Ireland.
