Dr Killian J. McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Strategy at Radboud University. He is also a Full Professor of Practice at the Kyiv School of Economics, in Ukraine, a Supervisor at the Royal College of Surgeons, in Ireland, a columnist at M&A Magazine, and, as of 2026, the Principal Investigator for a €1.5 million Horizon Europe project to assess Ukraine’s innovation infrastructure and provide a roadmap for its reconstruction.
Killian’s research focuses on how firms create and sustain value. To this end, he examines three interrelated topics: ‘Strategy’ – how do firms position themselves – ‘Scaling’ – how do firms grow through, for example, corporate venturing, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions – and ‘Systems’ – how do firms navigate the political and regulatory system. His work has been published in top scientific journals such as Research Policy and Energy Policy and in high visibility journals like Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan.
Previously, Killian was an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, and a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University London and National Chiao Tung University Taiwan. He also sat on the Supervisory Board of InnoOsst Alliance. Killian has a PhD in economics from the University of Groningen, Masters Degrees from Utrecht University and the University of Vienna, and a Bachelors degree with a double-major in economics and law from the National University of Ireland, all of which he earned cum laude.
